SOUTH NELSON MAYHEM by Fred Nachbaur, November 1999 "A Suite of Fractals" Op.3 No. 3 This one's a little different. Kind of a funky salsa jazz rock fusion thing. It started life as another sequence generated by "Well Tempered Fractal" (from a Kamtorus fractal, to be precise), one which sat on my hard drive for several months before going anywhere. The problem was converting a sequence of "interesting noises" into something that resembled music. Then it occurred to me that the charm of the sequence lay in its rhythm, rather than the melody. So I re-mapped it as drum sounds, and much to my delight the piece began to take shape. With only minor changes (to eliminate out-of-place drum instrument sounds) the sequence formed a nice drum track with a basic 5/8 rhythm. The bass line quickly evolved from that, and the rest was just the "90% perspiration" stuff. This piece is quite martial in flavour, and a great kick-off to Section II of the suite. (Are you beginning to see a pattern here?) Keep an eye out for a new freeware RPG containing this composition as a combat theme ;-) Fred Nachbaur
